"Plot is highly overrated," League of Legends
developer Riot Games narrative lead Tom Abernathy said today during a
Game Developers Conference presentation at the Moscone Center in San
Francisco. Abernathy, who previously worked at Microsoft on Halo: Reach, said internal and external research "proves that out."
It's not plot that truly hooks gamers, but rather characters, Abernathy said.
"Users
don't remember plot; what the do remember is they remember characters,"
Abernathy said. Players become "hooked" in a game if they care about
its characters, he explained.
"Focus on the
things that they will retain, that are going to be most important to
them in the long-run," Abernathy said to a room of developers and press.
"Focus on character."
But to create believable
and compelling characters, developers should make sure that characters'
motivations are aligned appropriately with the motivations that they
are leading the player to experience as well, Abernathy said.
Also
during the talk, co-presenter Richard Rouse III, a design lead at
Microsoft, said most players do not finish games. He estimated that only
about a third of players actually finish the games they play.
You can unlock nearly every side op in Metal Gear Solid V:
Ground Zeroes by beating the main mission, but the final one takes a
little extra effort on your part; you also need to find the "XOF"
patches that were thrown out of the helicopter during the intro story
sequence. If you're having trouble locating all nine patches, or any at
all, check out our guide for the exact locations of every XOF patch in
and around Camp Omega to unlock the "Deja Vu" mission on the PlayStation
3 and PlayStation 4, or the "Jamais Vu" mission on Xbox 360 and Xbox
One.
The
first patch is located close to your starting point during the main
mission. Simply turn around and explore the cliff-edge to your right
while facing the ocean and you'll find the first XOF patch laying in
wait.
For the second patch,
enter the camp and head down towards a group of tents to your left.
Right after you enter that area, examine the large, flat trash pile to
find the second patch
The
third patch is located north from the group of tents. Simply pick the
lock protecting three white electrical boxes (pictured left) and climb
the one to the left of the entrance to collect the third patch.
XOF Patch #4: Helipad
The
next three patches are nearby the admin building and the heliport,
north of the previous patch. First, look for a puddle near the middle
helipad in front of the admin building to find the fourth XOF patch.
XOF Patch #5: Drainage tunnel
Next,
head further north towards the admin building. Look for the drainage
tunnel behind a collection of scaffolding, and step inside to find the
fifth patch.
XOF Patch #6: Chimney
From there,
head west along the building and enter the red door to the right of the
large, front gate. Climb the white electrical boxes to your left
immediately after entering, and leap to the nearby rooftop to find the
sixth patch laying on the side of the exhaust chimney.
XOF Patch #7: Security guard station
That
does it for the patches near the admin building. Head east towards the
fence, and take the dirt road underneath the bridge to the south. Take
the first path to your left after passing under the bridge, and then you
should see a small white security guard station. Climb on top of it to
find the seventh XOF patch.
XOF Patch #8: Prison
Return
to the road you just came from and head south, then take the first path
to your left towards the prison where Chico is being held. Dispatch the
two nearby guards and pick the lock on the main entrance to the fenced
prison area. Take one step in after you pick the lock and you should
immediately find the eighth patch.
XOF Patch #9: Drop and roll
Finally,
the ninth patch. It's not hidden in the base; it's actually hidden on
Big Boss! Get into the crawl position. Simultaneously aim your weapon
and move to the left or right, and press in the analog stick as if to
sprint and you'll begin to roll. Continue rolling for 5-10 seconds, and
eventually, the final patch will pop off of your body and onto the
ground.
